Jews have German last names because many Jewish families living in Germany during the 18th and 19th centuries were required by law to adopt surnames for official identification purposes. These surnames were often based on the profession, location, or physical characteristics of the individual. Additionally, some Jewish families in Germany chose to adopt German-sounding last names to assimilate into German society and avoid discrimination. Over time, these surnames became part of the family's identity and were passed down through generations. **
